Lincolnshire
This
eastern county offers on one side the tranquillity, the history, and the natural
beauty of the Lincolnshire Wolds,
poachers country its called, and on the other side you have the
largest concentration of
holiday caravan accommodation of any English county, known as
the funcoast.
The
Lincolnshire Wolds, designated an Area of Outstanding Natural
Beauty in 1973, has some of the highest ground in Eastern England. Having been
moulded this way over thousands of years it now offers us some of the most
wonderful scenic views, with rolling hills and intimate valleys, of anywhere in
England.
Nature reserves now protect the many varieties of
birds,
flowers, plants, trees and wildlife that is abundant throughout
the 6,000 square kilometres of the county.
On
your journey through or around the Wolds, whether
walking, cycling
or by car take the opportunity to stop off and visit
some of the
traditional market towns,
villages and hamlets. Here you will find
wonderful architecture,
windmills and watermills,
history and heritage,
traditional pubs serving good food, open-air markets,
country parks and of course a warm Lincolnshire welcome. Lets not
forget the
National Trust properties in and around the county, the
historical
Lincoln Cathedral, once the tallest building in the world, and
the unforgettable
Lincoln Castle, which houses a copy of the
Magna Carta, to mention just a couple.
Some of the famous people that
were born in the county include
Alfred Lord Tennyson,
Sir Isaac Newton,
Sir John Franklin and
Margaret Thatcher, Britain's first woman Prime Minister.
Skegness
Sir Billy Butlin
escalated, in the 1930`s, what was the popular, middle class, holiday retreat of
Skegne
ss, established in the mid 1800`s, into the east coast mecca for working class
family’s by opening his
Butlins Holiday Camp to the masses. He offered them a
chance that
they had never been able to afford, a family holiday. Family accommodation,
three square meals a day, entertainment and family games all for one affordable
price, not forgetting the clean and healthy air of the seaside coast.
This explosion of holiday
makers continued to grow and expand throughout the years
and with it the
static holiday caravan market. Over the years the number of
Caravan Parks has increased well into the hundreds locally, many older one's
changing from mainly
touring caravan sites to static sites and, in the
majority of cases, any new development is now designed purely for static
holiday caravans, which means a continual growth to add to the many
thousands of holiday homes already in the area.
Today the holiday caravan market
in and around Skegness, and along the coast line through to
Mablethorpe, is worth hundreds of millions of pounds annually, to the local economy, as it is the most heavily populated caravan and recreational area of the
UK.
